The AGST Intercultural Studies programs provide mission leaders opportunities to reflect on their experience, to research, and to integrate their learning, in order to equip the next generation of Christian cross-cultural workers and strategists.

Program Description

The Doctor of Missiology and Ph.D-Intercultural Studies are designed to provide quality advanced training in missiology for qualified men and women. The program will prepare individuals for leadership position in mission organizations and local churches with well-developed missions programs; faculty for theological schools in intercultural studies; and researchers and specialists in missiology for the church in Asia and beyond.

Program Objectives

  • To understand the biblical, theological, historical, sociological and anthropological foundations for missionary ministry;
  • To understand the religious and cultural settings in which missionary ministries are conducted in Asia;
  • To demonstrate the qualities of character and leadership skills necessary for effective missionary ministry;
  • To articulate a philosophy of missionary ministry and develop appropriate strategies for the cross-cultural setting to which God has called them;
  • To demonstrate the ability to undertake original research and engage in critical thinking and theological reflection in at least one core area of missiological study.

Academic Requirements

Applicants must have a Master of Arts or a Master of Divinity in Missions or Intercultural Studies with a GPA of at least B (3.0 on a 4.0 scale; 1.75 on a 3.0 scale from a recognized/accredited school. Graduates of other M.A./M.Div. degrees may have to take additional missiological, Biblical and theological courses. Extensive cross-cultural missions experience may receive credit of up to 9 semester units in lieu of the required missiological course work .

Application Procedures

  • AGST—Intercultural Studies program application form with 2”x2” ID picture;
  • Official transcripts of credits covering all college/university and graduate work sent directly by the issuing school
  • A health certificate indicating physical fitness to pursue seminary studies
  • Financial Statement indicating how studies and personal/living expenses will be financed, including commitments from supporting institution and individuals
  • Letters of recommendation from the Academic Dean and a Professor of Missiology or Practical Theology from the applicant’s previous seminary experience, and a missionary or missions administrator who is familiar with the applicant’s current ministry.
  • A TOEFL or ATS /BSOP English proficiency test result of at least 550..
  • A quality research paper (4,000-5,000 words or 18-20 pages) on any missiological topic written by the applicant reflecting a graduate level research and writing skill. This could be a paper previously written for a course or one written specifically for entrance in the program and related to the desired study program of the applicant.
